Malia McDermott earned her Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northcentral University, a COAMFTE-accredited program known for its emphasis on clinical excellence and systemic thinking. She began her clinical work in 2018 with Catholic Community Services of Western Washington, primarily working with children and families. Malia brings a warm, collaborative approach to therapy and is passionate about helping children, teens, and families navigate difficult circumstances and build stronger, healthier relationships.
Malia has specialized experience supporting anxiety, depression, ADHD, addiction, and complex family dynamics. She has a particular interest in high-conflict and court-involved family situations, including co-parenting challenges and parent-child relationship concerns. Using a family-systems perspective and client-directed Play Therapy, she helps children process emotions, develop coping skills, and feel heard while also working with parents and caregivers to strengthen communication and family relationships. Malia believes early support can make a meaningful difference in helping families move toward healthier patterns and lasting connection.
Creating a safe and welcoming environment is an important part of Malia’s work, especially for children and teens. The Kids & Teens office features thoughtfully designed playrooms where young clients can feel comfortable, explore through play, and engage in therapy at their own pace. Malia values the care and attention that goes into creating these spaces and believes children are more able to open up and heal when they feel safe, welcomed, and understood.
Outside of therapy, Malia has coached high school and travel volleyball for more than two decades, bringing the same encouragement, consistency, and mentorship to her clinical work. She and her family relocated from the Seattle area to Hurricane, Utah, in 2019. She is married with two children, and their family enjoys all things sports—especially cheering on the Seattle Seahawks. Malia is proud to serve children, teens, and families throughout Southern Utah.
